Trying to be positive about the fact that I plunked down $40 for this book. For one, it got me somewhat motivated to study for this certification exam because it's been quite a while since school mode. Also, even though others have pointed out the gross errors and numerous spelling mistakes (my fave was gastrointestinal "track"...made me wonder if the authors dictated the book), at least I went searching for the right answers which helped the quality of my studying.In summary, don't waste your money. As mentioned by others, there are no rationales for the answers provided in the posttest, which does not make sense to me if you're going to design a "certification review" book.
It was published in 2008. I swear there were a handful of questions that had provided incorrect answers. It put me in the appropriate mindset to prepare for the exam but the subject matter was a bit dated. The questions in the back is what I used to prepare. I agree with the others that reviewed this book that rationale would have been SO helpful.
My favorite tidbit from this book: "Pneumonia vaccine is effective at preventing 56% to 81% of viral infections." (55) It's nice to know that a preventative measure for pneumococcal pneumonia will keep us all from getting herpes too. A normal INR is not 2 to 3 (36) and ESR is not used "...to determine the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen." (35) I'm still trying to figure out what "alular dysfunction" is as well. (86)Don't waste your money and certainly don't use this in your practice. You'll hurt someone.
I did take the ANCC gerontology exam and passed, but not because of this book. Besides being filled w/inaccurate info and typos on nearly every page (such as "areoli" instead of "alveoli"), almost NOTHING in the book was on the exam. MANY of the sample test questions had wrong answers in the key. The only good thing was info on how to apply to ANCC- which was another huge money waste: about $400 worth. What a racket!
I really want to give this book the benefit of the doubt. But truth is, I just can't. In the end, I completely agree with the majority report for this product: the book needs better editing; many of the review questions and concepts proved to be more confusing than clarifying. The exam answers do not give rationales, which left me scratching my heading wondering why the answer was what it was. Consider other books before this one; then, if you must, buy this one as a last-ditch effort to study.
The book is very informative. But, I wish it included the rationale with answers.
I passed the certification but not because I bought this book. Several practice questions are incorrect; some questions are duplicated but have different answers in key; several multiple choice questions have duplicate answers/responses for choices. Passed the certification but recommend reviewing the material and questions carefully due to some of the conflicting answers to some of the same questions and inaccurate information in the book. Book needs some serious editing as it is full of typos and inaccurate information.
This didn't help me at all!
