I loved the crazy nature of the crime and the way it was reported, including the background about the small group of fly-tiers, most of whom don't even fish, whose obsession provided the raison-d'être for a very bizarre crime. The crime was wrapped up about half-way through the book, so I wondered what the rest would entail. It turns out that the author spent time, energy and money on the un-asked-for pursuit of the birds that had not been accounted for by the authorities or by the museum from which they were stolen, both of whom assumed that most had been dismembered and sold as "parts." This mission has its moments, as the thief himself is interviewed at length, but, overall, this section is less satisfying. I'd give the first half of the book five stars, but the second half just two. IMPORTANT: When reading this book on the Kindle its not clear that there are many plates and illustrations at the end of the book showing the birds and the flies, along with pictures of the principals.

I read this well written book with tears. Being both an avid fly Fisher and birder, I found this book to be a timely epiteth to all those species that are vanishing before our eyes. The few who care and look upon these species with wonder are also vanishing. Soon, this earth will be decimated of its beauty. It is so difficult to go birding now and enjoy it as I once did because every bird I see now I realize will soon be gone. As for Kirk and his valiant efforts, thank you for shedding light on this weird, fanatical, useless hobby that has raped the world's jungles and forests all to glue shit on a hook to hang on a den wall. I just feel boiling anger after reading about this. Sad.

I read this book over one weekend as I could hardly bear to put it down. The true crime story of Edwin Rist and his ill-conceived but actually successful heist is a story that is too unlikely to be fiction. In the midst of telling his story, Johnson needs to share extensive obscure background information with readers and does so in a way that continues to drive the fascinating narrative forward. A hard to classify genre, it reminded me in turns of the best of well-researched literary nonfiction (think Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand or The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot) mixed with a little self-deprecating narrator-turned-character in the vein of A.J. Jacobs, along with a too-crazy-to-be-true caper that even channels the Oceans 11 franchise. This is a unique and compelling book that should not be missed!

This is a startling true story about the lengths a man will go to satisfy an obsession. The reader is introduced to the world of fly-tieing, the art of creating intricate fishing lures from bird feathers. What is remarkable about this activity is there is a subset of these tiers who collect extremely rare and valuable bird feathers and pay exorbitant prices for the most exotic ones. The subject of this book is such an individual. Edwin Rist is an accomplished student musician and avid fly-tier who steals hundreds of rare birds from the British Museum in 2009.The book is a study in obsession as the author himself, an Iraqi war veteran, becomes fixated on the crime and the man who committed it. The story is immersive. Johnson, the author, has spent an incalculable amount of time researching the history of fly-tieing and the lure of exotic feathers to the point of even surreptitiously attending a fly-tiers convention undercover. He becomes a principal investigator in solving the details of Edwin's crime, identifying accomplices and tracking bird skins.The book grabbed my interest from the first few pages. Johnson's book has all the pacing of a well-crafted mystery novel and manages to hold the suspense of exactly what happened and who was involved throughout the entire book. He covers this story with all the zeal of a professional investigative journalist. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes psychological character studies and true crime.

Well written book, history part in the beginning is methodical and at times a bit dry but the story of the fly tiers and their obsession with exotic feathers is capivating, the author makes this into page turning true crime tale.If you like odd stories of the strange things around us, you will enjoy this book.As you read the book, you will want to see photos of these beautiful birds to better understand the obsession, he has photos at the end or just Google them.

This book is sad and frustrating but fascinating at the same time. The National Geographic Article that accompanied the release of the book highlighted some of the major plot points of the book but it didn't stop me from buying it and diving into the obsession that drove a talented young man to rob the British Museum. The author also illustrates the importance of Museum collections and why institutions have more specimens than they could ever display.

Wonderful well researched , well written book, could not put it down. As a lover of birds and nature it shows me again how wasteful and cruel humans can be in their search to make money. Thank God for all the people out there that support the and care for nature and remember to treat nature with reverence. Please buy this book, you will learn so much, it is money well spent , it is brain FOOD, thank you Daunn Munn

I purchased this book because my four year daughter is a huge fan of the movie and to put it mildly is going through a "Frozen" phase. I thought I'd surprise her with it and it's been worth ten times the amount that I paid for it. The only trouble is that she wants me to read it to her all the time. Or she takes it to preschool with her and wants her teachers to read it to her there. She will probably outgrow this phase soon, but for the pleasure it has given her so far it has given me a real bang for my buck!It's a fairly simplified breakdown of the plot of the animated film, with illustrations from the movie. Certain parts of the story are emphasized by writing words, phrases or full sentences all in capital bold letters. For example, when Anna tries to convince her sister to marry a prince she has only just met, it says:" Frustrated, Anna tried to stop her sister and accidentally PULLED OFF one glove." PULLED OFF for some reason is in bold caps while the accompanying illustration has Anna dangling the glove in the air. Every page or two have different examples of this. "Elsa had magical powers" and the "magical powers" will be the only part written in bold text but it doesn't detract from the story. Still, the format and style are slightly unusual for a Little Golden book but like many other picture books, sometimes the text on the page will get bigger, or sometimes it will purposefully get smaller to compliment illustrations. It enthralls my little girl again and again and it also would be easy for a beginning reader to decipher.I loved Little Golden Books as a child, and have passed many of them down to my daughter. They are all still in surprisingly good condition after 40 some years. The plots are uncomplicated, yet woven together seamlessly, and always end on a positive high note. The books seem to last forever and fit nicely together on book shelves, but most importantly they recount so many beloved stories from generation to generation, and instill a lifetime of memories and I'm so glad that they still are making them. For years they have provided affordable options for most parents, when so many children's books are pricey. I understand there is a larger Disney version of this book that is also available with more detailed illustrations and longer in length, but this is a much cheaper yet still highly satisfying alternative. It travels well and we can bring it on buses, subways or short road trips. If nobody has time to read it to her, she entertains herself with the pictures and pretends to read it to herself. It makes for a fun (and quick) bedtime story, and yesterday when I dropped my daughter off at preschool she was carrying it with her in her mittened hands, and one of her little friends had her own copy of it and waved it at us. "See Annabel? I got my mom to get me a "Frozen" book too!" It's so endearing to see how happy such a little thing can make a child. They get so excited to have something like this to share with each other. So, be sure to write your child's name in the section where it says "This Little Golden Book belongs to:" because when I picked her up from school later that day, the only way we could figure out whose book was whose was the fact that even though it's less than a month old, the pages of our copy are already dog eared.

When you read it without knowing the story, its difficult to follow. The book seems to skip parts of the story. I guess you can't help it since its a short story book. Recommend you read the story before reading it to your little one.

Pretty cheap book. I wasn't expecting much since I didn't pay more than a few bucks for this book. Unfortunately, when it arrived the book had a pretty good bow to it. Almost like it was shaped around a very shallow bowl. It just wasn't very flat.We own quite a few golden books in our kids book collection and I think that their quality has gone down hill. The older books just seem like they were put together with better materials. The paper is quite thin now and the covers don't seem quite as sturdy.For the price I can't complain too much. But I wouldn't give it a very high rating. I would say it is just okay.

My daughter is at an age where she loves all things princess -- but isn't too sure about the bad guys, so the movies have been a little challenging for her to handle. I've found these Little Golden Books the perfect appetizer to the main course. The books are well-illustrated, follow the plots of the movies closely, use language that is easy to understand, and give us time to pause if we need to. We can re-read certain sections if she has questions. If she seems scared, we can stop and we can talk about what's going on, skip ahead to get to the happy ending and reassure her that the scary parts are just a bump in the road. I am really happy that these books exist!

My daughter love's the movie Frozen and all of the characters, she was even Princess Else for Halloween. It's hard to find book's to hold her interest and I let her pick a couple out now for her review..She liked the layout of the story, as it was similar to the movie with beautiful color. What either of us didn't like about the book that they could have done a better job, was to either make the print larger or as in some book's you can enlarge the picture to read, which in this case you could do neither.I would recommend this book, but bring your magnifying glass.

We love the movie, the music, have Anna and Kristoff dolls, and we love this book. My daughters and son have me read it quite frequently. The artwork is very pretty - it is NOT the computer graphics from the movie, but instead brings to mind geometric paintings from the 60s. It's bright, pretty, stays pretty true to the movie. Our ONLY criticism is that there are no "quotes" from the movie, just a dry - "then this happened, and that happened, and she did that..." instead of "Anna said, 'Do you want to build a snowman?'" But we just ad-lib those parts and we're good at our house. :-)

I got this Golden Book for my 4 year old great granddaughter, who is taken with all things FROZEN at this time. I have a long history with the quality of these books throughout many years . They have remained as treasures in my library for future generations. I haven't seen the movie and didn't know much about the story so I ordered this as a tutorial for me and another book to read to my great granddaughter when she visits. I liked the overall story and it's meaning. I have the audio book in a longer version that I haven't had opportunity to listen to with her. I believe this shorter one will serve better until she is older.

Classic book publisher with a nice shortened version of the original story. My toddler loves this book and every page is filled with full color illustrations.

This book was pretty good. Its the first book I read of this author. Even though this is not my kind of read, I am enjoying it. I wanted to take a break from dark horror books and read some drama, and boy did I find a nice pocket full. I will try more books from this author in the future when I want a nice drama story.EDIT REWVIEW 10-26-2012The last few chapters of this books will have you saying "WHAT!!" "OMG!" "HUH!" "WOW!" The book takes off at the near end! The outcome is not predictable. (At least not to me!) The last few chapters in this book has made me come back and edit my review and give it a 5 star other than a 4.When I first made the review, I was close to finishing it but I thought I would know how it would end. Boy was I a dummy! I recomend you buying this book or buy it for a friend! This was a good book of players who thought they could never be played.

i finished reading the hot box sometime last week after having it in my Kindle Library for the longest . i was captured into the story only after the first few chapters . i liked it for the most part because it was very different from other novels Zane has written (and i've read a good amount of her books) . from the steamy sex scenes to the love story . parts of the plot and the main character Milena dissapointed me at times but the ending made it all worth it ! Good read !!

Zane's latest novel "The Hot Box" is a page turner, just like all her other novels. I truly enjoyed this book. In this novel we meet Lydia and Milena, 2 best friends stuck in a rural North Carolina town, Kannapolis.Lydia is juggling two men: Glenn and his best friend Phil. Only Glenn has no clue, Lydia and Phil have been gettin' it on for years!! Lydia works at a grocery store and is totally disgusted with her life; she desires to get out of Kannapolis and find stardom. In the meantime, messing with two men and satisfying her huge sexual appetite will keep her busy. Hopefully, her secret affair with Phil will remain a secret!!Milena is a veteranarian and has lived a sheltered life ever since breaking up with her one time fiancee Jacour, former superstar millionaire baseball player for the Yankees. Milena spends her time tending to sick pigs and cows yet her love life is as dead as it can be. Hoping to spice things up when Jacour returns to Kannapolis, Milena meets Yosef and convinces him to assist her in a plan to make Jacour jealous. The plan works, and soon Milena's boring life and frumpy clothes are gone. Milena finds herself in a love triangle with more drama than she could have ever imagined!"The Hot Box" was a great read, and I love that it wasn't the typical setting or storyline I read in most books! 5 stars!! I'm looking forward to Zane's next book!

These best friends appear to be opposites at first, but before long it becomes clear that the old saying, "Birds of a feather flock together." rings true.Milena's ex Jacour abruptly returns to town for good after eight years of playing for the Yankees. He is on a mission to reclaim his lost love and although she is still in love with him, she still refuses for forgive him for his only transgression. She is determined to search every inch of the state for a man that can pose as the fake "light of her life" as she puts it, Randolph. Disturbingly, Milena finds her fake Randolph in the form of a homeless man begging for change in the street. Once the man, whose actual name is Yosef, agrees to lie for her, not only does she clean him up and let him move in, but she actually develops feelings for him. Love and lies were already involved, but sex quickly follows as Milena finds herself stuck in a love triangle with a millionaire and a vagrant.Lydia has a scandal of her own that she immerses herself in. Not only is she having sex with her boyfriend Glenn everyday, she is also doing it with his best friend Phil as much as she can. She feels as if her lady parts are lined in gold, and that she is irresistible to the opposite sex. She somehow feels that her beauty and bedroom skills can get her anything she wants, yet her reality is very bleak. She works a dead in job, lives off of her boyfriend because she cannot support herself, and has never done anything halfway decent with her life. She absolutely hates living in North Carolina and dreams of moving constantly, but never does anything but make empty plans. Lydia doesn't care a bit for the men in her life, and as repulsive as this character is, she is somehow endearing.Although the roller coaster of ups and downs with Milena, Jacour, and Yosef/Randolph is frustrating, unnerving, and sure to make you cringe, you won't be able to put this book down. You will be flipping pages as fast as you can watching the story of Lydia, Glenn, and Phil unfold while holding your breath waiting for the other shoe to drop. The happily ever after ending is sure to shock. The Hot Box: A Novel was of course well written, like all of Zane's other novels. It has a flow unlike her older works and along with Total Eclipse of the Heart: A Novel, it is in a different class. Although the drama and the sex are still there, Zane now seems to be focusing more than ever on the meaning behind everything she writes. Noticeably trying to reach out to her readers and teach us lessons as she entertains. Although noble, I say it unfortunately does not make the material better, but takes from it. I will still buy the next novel if this new style of Zane is here to stay but, I doubt it will be a five star read.

I enjoyed reading this book. I oftentimes don't have time to read as much as I like between my family life and work. However, this book was so good, I couldn't put it down. I ordered it on kindle and I read it within one day. The only negative aspect I can point out is the way the "twist" unfolded. The reactions of some of the characters did not seem real to me. Hence, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. But that is nothing major to make me not recommend the book for reading.

I read this book in 2 days. It started off slow but after the 3rd chapter it started to get very interesting. Ladies...never say what you won't do. You can't judge someone on their outer appearance. This is a must read. I let my girlfriend read it and she finished it in a day and a half. It's full of twist and turns. This book had me laughing out loud. It's a good easy read. You won't want to put it down. Check it out.

Bought it for my roommates birthday and she can't get enough of it. Even played roulette and we yelled out random numbers to see if we got a naughty page, so much fun. She's not big on reading but wanted a steamy book. She likes drama and this book is full of tea. Five stars!

Enjoyable characters, good setting, moves along at a good pace. Like the style of writing, and easy to follow. The relationship between the sleuths is nice and relaxing. Twists, and turns then a nice surprise ending in the capture of the murder.

The fourth book in the Wagging Tail Cozy Mystery series is another great one. The main characters continue to develop. Each of the dogs have their own personalities and Cindy Bell describes them a little more with each new book.Nikki Green is helping her friend Tom Drice build his dream -- a dog training academy with many perks for the dogs. Tom has had problems with his builder, Matthew Leaner, being on time with the project. It has been a constant struggle. Matthew and Tom have a verbal argument and Tom threatens to hire a new builder to finish the project on time so they can have their grand opening.When it appears that Matthew has walked off the job leaving his tools, truck and everything else there, Tom tries to file a missing person report on Matthew. Rumor has it that Matthew has had money problems and has not been paying his employees their wages. The day he disappeared Matt also had an argument with his employee, Theo Lambert, over who is paying for the gas in the van to pick up materials.It is well known that Matt's fiancee', Briana Murrow, has a family that doesn't think Matt is good enough for Briana.Nikki and Sonia Whitter (Princess' owner) decide to look into Matt's disappearance. Someone delivers copies of letters from Patrick Kirk Builders to Nikki's apartment. Nikki also witnesses a confrontation between Charles Murrow, Briana's grandfather, and their man, Vick, at the guard shack. This 4th book in the Wagging Tail Cozy Mystery series as been as terrific as the first 3. I continue to enjoy the development of the main characters and their interactions, and the dogs are so much fun, each with his or her own personality. In this story, Nikki is helping a friend, Tom, prepare to open a Dog Training Academy around her regular job as dog walker. When the head of the construction crew goes missing and turns up dead at the grand opening of the academy, the race is on to find out who killed him. Nikki and her friend, Sonia, really want to help solve the mystery while the police detective, Quinn, who really likes Nikki, would rather they not. They should leave it to the police. Lots of twists and turns and mayhem ensues as they all follow the clues to the murderer. The author has a terrific way of making the story seem so very real, and she has a fun sense of humor. I so enjoy her books. The dogs make for a wonderful bonus!

A good read. A nice plot about a spoilt brat that ends in murder with a great ending. The characters have really grown and developed as have their relationships.She fits in helping Tom between her dog walking. Tom however is in a state. His builder is behind d on the project and with opening day coming fast it just seems like the last straw when the builder vanishes. As too does his fiancee - a spoilt Princess from a wealthy family who are totally against the marriage. The more she and Sonia find out the more they realise that both the builder and Tom are in deep cash flow trouble. Is the fiancee dead too? Can they find out who murdered the man and possibly his fiancee? From a controlling family, to another builder who uses bully tactics, to unpaid employees the list seems huge. Who did it?

We have plenty of twists and turns in this latest dog walking mystery.I loved the storyline,the interesting characters and all the fur babies.This book is recommended for those who love cozy mysteries.

I love this series by Cindy Bell and I can't wait for the next book if you love a great cozy with characters you will love and a story that keeps you turning the page then this series is a must read

I am so glad i found this author and even more glad she is a prolific writer. Her books never get old, no matter who the heroine is. Please keep them coming and coming and coming!

Great cozy mystery! I love how the author makes it easy to follow and enjoy the characters and their stories along with revealing clues to the mystery. Always a good clean read.

This book has, to me, some of the best card descriptions out there. The author just really personalizes the cards so that you begin to see them come alive in your life and the people you know. She offers vignettes from her own life to illustrate situations that evoke each of the cards. I buy Tarot books a lot and this is, frankly, the first one that has not been something of a disappointment in recent months. So many books regurgitate the same information with only slight variation, but this book is really a cut above. The author has really poured a lot of love and effort into this book. You will feel like you really "know" the cards as you read this book.My only gripe is that the author bases her text on the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, but the illustrations in the text are not from that deck. They were created for this book, which makes no sense to me since therefore the author's descriptions of the cards don't always fit the card images in this book. For example, she talks about the 12 stars in the Empress' crown-- but the Empress pictured here has no such crown. It's confusing, or would be for a beginner. I suggest having a RWS deck beside you as you go through this book so that, in those incidences where the card description doesn't match what you see in the book, you can see what she's talking about. Also, you'll need a deck anyway (the pictures in the book aren't available as a deck), so might as well get the RWS.

I am having so much fun with this book. Some of the personal writing that relates Tarot and the authors life-events do not make much sense to me, as this is such a subjective topic. But the rituals for each card are super interesting and fun. I have clients that actually find performing ritual helps them a lot, and aligns them to the workings of the world; a lot like religious ritual helps folks. This book is fun, informative and when you pull a card out of the deck you have to option of reading the description but to also " BE " the card by putting it to practice. Great buy. Can be used with any deck.

I'm so glad I bought this book. As I age it's harder to memorize, and absorbing the meanings of each tarot card has been difficult. This is fun and well written, with a touch of memoir to give examples and a touch of witchiness, with playful spells at the end of each card's description to "either bring the energy of that card into your life or get rid of it."I'll quote an early description that convinced me "Ah, I can remember these!" Michelle Tea writes, "The swords are brainy, mental, quick, tactless, painful and are ruled by the element Air. They're like that brilliant professor you had in grad school, the very one you hoped to be critiqued by, who stepped into your studio wearing an impeccable, avant-garde outfit only he could carry off and proceeded to rip your work to shreds. The worst part - he was right."The descriptions can be used with any deck, but she uses the illustrations on the Rider-Waite, which most other decks start from. There are no lay-outs, just the meaning of each card and encouragement to come up with your own story as you study what comes together, intuition often giving surprisingly true results. Tea often assumes you might choose one card from the deck for work on yourself.

Tea's writing is accessible and relatable, as she blends tarot card descriptions with her own experiences and spell ideas. The book is a blend of tarot and general witchcraft, thoroughly rooted in the modern era and specifically in a justice-oriented intersectional mindset. I love how some of the card interpretations are intentionally adjusted to recognize these values. This book doesn't claim neutrality, but is perfect for a certain kind of tarot newbie.

This book is an absolute must-have...I have been reading tarot for a long time, but the modern spin on the traditional narrative really helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the cards. Also, I love Michelle Tea's respectful yet fun approach to the tarot! The book itself is super enjoyable to read cover-to-cover, but I find myself referring back to it all the time. As a practicing witch, I really like the spells included for each card, which inspire and motivate the reader to connect with the energy of the cards in a new way. This is a great book.

This is a fantastic primer or re-primer for Tarot lovers and would-be Tarot lovers. I've read more Tarot books than I can count, but I read through this one as though the information was all new to me because in many ways, it was! My favorite elements were the pieces of memoir that effortlessly illustrated the more traditional meanings of the cards. Tea breaks open the gender binary, which for me, as a professional Tarot reader, was helpful particularly in working with GNC clients and querents. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

I don't always agree 100% with all of the interpretations of the author, but I love keeping this guide handy whenever I do a reading for myself. It's like having a Tarot savvy friend sitting next to you and providing you with extra insight for your reading. One of my favorite guides that I've used. Would definitely recommend.

Absolutely love this book! I have been learning tarot for over a year and this book has propelled my learning forward in great leaps! She is real and funny and I just love her writing style as well as the content. Would absolutely recommend this book for any tarot reader new or intermediate level. It might be a bit redundant if you are a seasoned reader but since I am not that, you could love it!

This book is McCall Smith's second book in the "Akimbo" series and like virtually all his books, it is masterfully done. In this book, Akimbo goes on a trip with his father, the new Head Gamekeeper of the wildlife preserve. They have gone to check out reports that a lion is eating cattle. The loss of cattle is akin to the loss of pure gold in Akimbo's part of Africa. Thus, such a lion must be handled.Akimbo begs his father to take him on the trip. With some trepidation, his father agrees. The team of Gamekeepers and Akimbo travel to the farm which has reported the problem. No one actually has seen the lion, but they believe by the sounds and the results that it is surely a lion. The Gamekeepers set a trap, using a goat as bait. The trap is supposed to work by capturing the lion when he goes to get the goat.The trap is set up, and Akimbo and his father get set to wait out the night and see what happens. As luck would have it, the lion does show up on that night. The trap is sprung, and Akimbo's father goes to check the trap. As soon as his father leaves the hiding place, Akimbo notices, he has forgotten his rifle. His father approaches the trap, and is dismayed to find, the lion is not in the trap. The lion is standing outside the trap, and starts to close in on Akimbo's father.Akimbo has never shot a rifle before, but he has observed his father use it. He picks up the gun. He aims, and his father tells him, "Shoot into the air." Akimbo does so twice. The lion leaves quickly. Then they go to find out why the trap di not work, and find that it is sprung. Inside is a very small baby lion cub. The rest of the book discusses Akimbo's relationship with the lion cub, and the eventual release of the lion into the wild.Once again, McCall Smith has created a wonder of a book. It is highly recommended as a children's story. It provides a look at a very different society and world than the American world. In addition, it shows the respect of the people for the animals. All parents with young children should find this book a great addition to their children's reading library.

In this short children's book, McCall Smith is as usual interested in ethics and morality. The book centers on Akimbo, a child of about 7 or 8 years of age. Akimbo becomes aware that there are people that poach Ivory, by killing elephants illegally and taking the tusks. Akimbo learns this when he and his father, a park ranger come upon a dead elephant and a live calf. Akimbo is bothered greatly by this situation. Not only is he bothered by the dead mother, but also by the calf left behind.In discussing this with his father, Akimbo discovers that it is very, very difficult for poachers to be caught and brought to justice. He hatches a plan to do just that. His plan is to find out who the poachers are, and get proof of their illegal activity. Then to turn this information over to his father so the poachers can be brought to justice.In effectuating his plan, Akimbo is exposed to considerable personal danger. Nonetheless, he decides that the unethical behavior of the poachers is worth the risk to his person. The story tells how Akimbo achieves this objective. The book is an excellent story for children and teaches not only ethics and morality, but also something about Africa and elephants and Ivory. It should be considered by all parents trying to show examples of ethical and unethical behavior to their young children. In addition, it shows the concept that one has the choice to act ethically, or to just sit it out and watch. Akimbo chooses the former rather than the later.

Akimbo is interested in animals and asks lots of questions just like most kids. Unlike most kids his dad is a ranger in a preserve in Africa. You will learn a lot about lions in an exciting and slightly dangerous story. Great for early readers and a wonderful book for challenged readers. Doesn't talk down to even 5th or 6th graders.

This atlas, and all the Delorme map books, are wonderful. They have everything that resembles a road, and then some. Well worth owning.

Love the Gasetteer-- Had one in my truck for years. It disappeared when I moved and this is a replacement. It's reassuring to have the detailed maps back on board!

This is handy to have but lacks the detail that it could 7 should have. Back roads are usually unmarked when there is room to put it in. We have found ourselves lost many times when trying to take one of them. There are too many intersecting roads that are not listed and those that are are not labeled.

We're big DeLorme fans and have been for many, many years. There's nothing like holding a map in your hand, and these are very good maps, except the ringers bug me.

This, “The Third Option,” is the third in the Flynn catalogue and the second in the Mitch Rapp series and it continues Flynn’s extraordinary talents and painstaking attention to detail. In this episode, we find our hero looking anxiously toward retirement with this, his self-imposed final mission. He’s met and fallen in love with national network news reporter Anna Reilly and he’s determined to put this period of subversive violence, loneliness and subterfuge behind him to start anew.Honoring a commitment for one last mission however, Rapp finds himself in Germany, surveilling and ultimately removing a rogue German Chancellor. Teamed with two other seemingly benign operatives, something still grates at his instinct: there is something not at all right about this assignment and as his surveillance turns into execution, Mitch is proven correct. During the violent shootout, he barely escapes with his life and must use all his skills to make a clean getaway.Suspecting immediately that there is a leak in his CIA sponsored command, he returns to the U.S. to angrily confront his leaders CIA Director Thomas Stansfield and Terrorism Chief Irene Kennedy. And as I keep telling myself, thank god there are many more like this in the Flynn catalogue.

I'm a big fan of a number of genres, the spy thriller a favorite among them. The best of the bunch aren't the killer machines (tho they possess the skills and gumption), or the bumbling type, but the ex-military, skilled beyond compare types who struggle with juggling their ultra-dangerous calling while attempting to hold onto their humanity and thus avoiding the soulless killer mentality that constantly threatens to overtake them. Fans of Jack Bauer, Jason Bourne- even James Bond, will find a lot to like about Mitch Rapp.The prose tends to be hard hitting- but intelligent as well. The writer has passed away in the prime of his life, so there are only 13 or 14 novels in which he has written, tho I hear tell of a talented associate who has taken over writing duties. What this means for Mitch only time will tell. Much of the novel is about the set up and the author seems to have an in-depth knowledge of the seamier side of politics and those who play the game. The principal characters may seem formulaic and one-dimensional at first, but I urge you to read on, get to know them. It is well worth it.When he's not "on the job", Mitch is very much a regular guy, with some truly awesome skillsets and a penchant for cutting thru the typical BS to get to the heart of the matter. In fact, he reminds me most of Jack Bauer, and if you know anything about him or the series 24, you know that is no bad thing.I could go on, but it is much better (and more rewarding) for you to draw your own conclusions. I'll be here to tell you "I told you so"!

There are 13 books so far in the Mitch Rapp series. I have read the previous 3 + 1. The +1 is Term Limits which is an introduction to a lot of characters introduced in the Mitch Rapp series.I really love the books I have read so far. Very engrossing, fast paced ( although at some places there is way too much detail into a character's back ground. Characters, that are just passing thru the book and will never appear again.So far I find the books...., cant put it down type of books.The reason for the 3 stars is. I really, really, cannot stand the personality Mr Flynn has been giving the females("significant half").They all start off as strong, sensible women. In this book Rapp's girlfriend is a reporter, Anna Rielly, who originally appeared in book # 3 ( Transfer of Power). She is a White House reporter. is strong enough to get over rape ( when she was in collage, i think), was held hostage & beaten by terrorists in the previous book ( that is how She met Mitch). But now that She is with Mitch, She is a watering pot, is always acting immature, wants to call the police all the time, even though Mitch keeps explaining to Her, its a matter of National security and the local police cannot be involved. Just plain stupid.Mr Flynn has done the same with Rapps previous Girlfriend Greta Ohlmeyers, in Book# 2, Kill Shot.The same with another character Congressman O'Rourke's Girlfriend (now Wife), Liz Scarlatti.And yet the other women in the books, Irene Kennedy, Francine Neville (from Kill Shot) are very likable women.Mr Flynn got rid of Greta. Hence Anna came along. I seriously hope Anna is gone too in all the future series I plan to read.

I loved this book. Just starting the next one to see what happens with Senator Clark trying to undermine the CIA. It took Mitch a while to find out who his enemy really is and still hasn't discovered the entire truth. The is exciting to say the least. I'm sorry to read that the boss, Thomas Stansfield is very ill. It's a character that I really enjoyed because of his calm demeanor. It's a good thing he has the President's ear. There are too many people who don't like him and are willing to go to great lengths to dethrone him. I'm sorry I started reading this series to late but I'm so excited to be reading it now. I will catch up with all the Mitch Rapp books in the coming year.

This is not a flawless book, by any means. The author dumbs the writing down just a little too much for a suggested audience of "Ages 10 & up," the book shifts randomly from past to present tense, and there's at least one paragraph that's repeated almost word for word more than once.But, that said, it's one of the ONLY books about the Aleutian Islands, and as far I can tell, is the ONLY book period about kayaking along them. For that alone, it's worth a lot.One of my dreams is to kayak from Anchorage, Alaska to Russia, along the Aleutian peninsula and the Aleutian Islands, and in my research for this trip I've come across very few books on the topic. My wife found this one for me.Not only does this book contain some beautiful photos (by Barry Tessman, R.I.P), but it gives a good idea of the dangerousness of the waters, of the area's history, of the general terrain, and of the preparations neccesary for such a trip.It's a quick read, but for those in love with Alaska or this area in particular, it will haunt you for days.

As a fourth grade teacher in the central California foothills, I am always looking for nonfiction titles with high interest for my classroom. A friend bought this book from Barry Tessman's widow and I immediately ordered a copy. We study Explorers and Geographers as part of our 4th grade curriculum and this book leads into a great discussion about modern day exploring. Pictures and maps are easy to read, text and font grade-appropriate, natural history and wildlife pictures very appealing.
