I discovered Codewords in my daily paper a few months ago -- it had always been there, but I never really focused on it. Then I fell in love with the puzzle and started hunting for collections of codeword puzzles. I'd put The Times Codeword Book 1 in the middle of the pack. The print is smaller, the lines not as sharp, and I don't like that, in addition to the clues filled in on the 1-26 grid, they print the given letters in three spaces. Also, you should know that The Times is a British newspaper, so the spellings are British spellings.My most favorite book of codewords, also purchased from Amazon, is from Clarity Media. The paper is whiter and the lines are crisper.My least favorite is Classic Codeword Puzzles by Lubandi. As in The Times' volume, the paper is yellower and the lines muddier; plus, they put the answers to another puzzle at the bottom of the page -- very distracting. I wish I could return it and The Times book and buy several more of the Clarity Media, of which I'm now on Volume 2.
These games are great if you love crossword puzzles and words themselves. They are very tricky. Each puzzle is set up like a crossword puzzle, and uses all 26 letters. The squares have numbers in them, and by matching the numbers with a letter, you can solve the puzzle. I found it hard at first, but the more you complete, the more familiar you become with generalized uses of letters, and that helps solve the puzzle. They provide you with a few letters to start with, and then you complete the rest as you try to figure out which words correspond to the given letters.
The easy level is a bit too easy. The moderate level is fine but the difficult level has words in it which are not to be found in dictionaries and that I have never heard before. Does make the puzzles difficult but I would prefer it if the words were at least in the dictionary. Example "erne" an archaic word for "earn". How many people will know that?
I'm totally addicted to these puzzles and probably always will be. So once I have finished this set, I will be back.
I have gotten tired of sudoku and crossword puzzles. Codeword puzzles are the perfect transition. Thank you. These volumes from The Times of London are excellent for the novice, ranging from easy to more difficult to hard. They will exercise your mind.
Code Words is a wonderful alternative to crosswork puzzles and sudoku! I love this book as do the friends and family I have given copies to. My only comment is that the print is a bit small so for me I had to make sure to wear my reading glasses when working on a puzzle.
I'm a big fan of code word puzzles, This one is small enough to fit in my purse and I can take it with me wherever. Has come in handy several times, ie, Dr's office, while waiting for a table to become available in a busy restaurant, etc. Thoroughly enjoying it.
Great games! I love the codeword book and order it again and again.
