I know a lot of them, and there must be many whom I don't know.This gives the book a one-sided, anti-PLP bias. Anyone interested in serious reading or research on SDS at that period will have to do a lot of interviews to correct this bias.Too bad! The WSA and SDS Work-in are an important part of the history of SDS and the American Left in the 1960s. We need an objective account of it.
I read this book for research and education purposes.Very good for background on the development of the white student left and the anti-war movement during the turbulent '60's.

Involvement in any left-wing organization has strengths and weaknesses. You learn how to make speeches, do security, defend against fascists, organize events, do union work, write, work on software, handle technical issues, travel, gain national and perhaps international contacts and understand different aspects of Marxism. The negatives are the political and organizational structure all this is done in, which can be restrictive and wrong-headed or absurdly loose, where nothing gets done. This books shows through real anecdotal experiences both the strengths and weaknesses of PL, who were a significant fraction of the leftists that were inspired by the 1960s, the Afro-American rebellion and the Chinese Revolution
the reviewers says the majority of SDS supported the WSA--that is not true =the majority of student politics were inchoate --atttutudes toward working for cared wildly. PL was a sect already shedding its maoism in favor of a politics even more bizarre --this s not the place to go into the pathologies of the various sects not which SDS split. As for the book i knew some of these folks --one very well. One comes away with a great sadness of a moment missed, of friends greatly missed. PL was one destructive force among many and I do not regret its passing but the memories recorded here are worth reading
