I purchased this book for a GE class - so I had no choice - and honestly, I wouldn't buy it otherwise. Not that it didn't have it's interesting moments. If your major is Chicano Studies and you are focusing on gender studies or Texas - then this book might prove useful.
This book is essential reading for anyone serious about understanding the cultural productions and contributions of Chicana popular performing artists. Powerfully conceived and eloquently written, this book reveals the endless and complex negotiations of nation, race, gender, sexuality, and power that Chicana singers both endured and generated. It is a key text for understanding the foundational issues that continue to underlie Chicana performance. Highly recommended.
