I expected more from this book, but I recognize that it is also an early reader level 2. My son is now a level 4 reader, and went through this book in no time. I had hoped for more in the lines of identification, but this is really just a "how we got it" overview. And for that purpose, it's not bad.It is true to its reading level. Any child who is at the "I can read" level 2 will find this to be only "slightly" difficult. Of course, level two is still a "reading with assistance" level, something they will need for help with the pronunciation of many of the scientific terms introduced. But by no means is this a basic field guide, something that is most likely my mistake. Next time I will specifically search for field guide instead of assuming that basic rock identification was included (a few are presented, but not enough to be considered a guide).
I previewed this before I sent it to my 8-year-old granddaughter, and was pleased to see it's a pretty good little book for kids who like rocks (she collects them). Most second-graders can read the book independently if they are reading at grade level, and the pictures are fine. It is a very elementary introduction to rocks and minerals, but a good overview with the important facts and features explained. I did not give it five stars because I think that for the price I paid, it could have been somewhat larger, with even better quality photos-- that "National Geographic quality" consumers have come to expect.
My husband and I read this before giving to our 2nd grade granddaughter. We had also purchased a mounted rock collection from Amazon, called: "American Educational The U.S. Mounted Rocks and Minerals Reference Collection (Pack of 24)" This book and that particular collection seem as if they were made for use together. Almost all the rocks described in the book were mounted in the little collection. I think it will be a great introductory book and collection for a child this age. She has reading difficulties, so having a collection of the actual rocks talked about in the book should help her with understanding.
Meh. It's a lesson on the earth & igneous/metamorphic rocks. Only 1 or 2 photos of minerals. This book should be re named "Rocks: How they are formed." While the book is educational I bought it for a 4 year old fascinated with minerals and sparkly rocks. We kept the book but I wish I had only ordered 1. We bought 3. 2 to give as gifts with starter rock & mineral collections. I was hoping this would be like a mini Audubon book on minerals. Contains great info but not the photos I was hoping for.
This is a well written book that my 6yo daughter is enjoying. It is also surprisingly a bit water-proof as the 3yo son threw the book into the pool. I figured it was a gonner, but we fished it out and put it in the warm laundry room while a load was going through the dryer. The pages are wrinkled, but the print is still good.
The best series ever for young readers. It is very hard to find books for young readers that are based on the natural world. The photos are beautiful, the storyline is full of accurate, interesting, scientific facts about the subjects, and has a vocabulary building review at the back of the book. And each book in this series has several upside down jokes that reference the subject, an added point of interest for Montessori and all children. BTW, I have gotten more than 30 of these titles for my classroom. Highly recommended!
I bought this book along with a rock and mineral set for my 7 year olds birthday. He loves it. I did think the book would be bigger, but it's great because he can bring to school in his backpack or in the car easily.
Great price for this little tiny book on rocks. As far as information goes it is limited as it is an easy to read book. It is below my sons reading level but it was so cheap I figured I would just throw it in for him as he is very into geology.
