The best thing about this book is D’Souza’s frontal assault on atheism. He shows it to be a fraudulent concept based on debunked philosophical positions and he demonstrates the frightening paths atheism will take the human race down. It was atheism that spawned the most destructive regimes in modern history and has slaughtered more human beings than any other theoretical position ever taken. Atheism frees men to kill without compassion and rule without conscience. What’s So Great About Christianity also puts reality into a non-materialistic light. Can our five senses tell us all we need to know about the universe? As the author points out, before the Big Bang reality as we know it did not exist, because the orderly laws of the universe did not exist. The Big Bang theory starts out with light; that is, the first thing out of the box was light – a universe flooded with light. In Genesis God starts creation with “Let there be light.” No other ancient text does this, or anything even close. D’Souza is able to make this point rationally and without hyperbole. The key is, materialism cannot explain the universe or our world. D’Souza’s assault on the evolutionary canard “it must have happened because we are here,” is well worth the price of the book all by itself. And D’Souza does all of this without resorting to supernatural explanations about reality.More than one documentary exists showing that animals hold senses we do not. A lion was raised by two men who later left it with a game reserve and they moved to another nation. After many years this pair of humans decided to return to look for their feline friend. He was waiting at the airport when they arrived. The gamekeeper told them the lion had appeared a few days before they landed, and he had never seen the animal before. Other documentaries show dogs being able to discern when their masters are starting toward home after shopping. No amount of materialistic or evolutionary BS is going to explain these occurrences. Although these samples are not in D’Souza’s book, they back up his arguments. What’s So Great About Christianity also contends that Christianity, alone among the religions of the world, can provide the answers the world seeks. Christianity and rationality combine beautifully. In addition, Christianity befriends the lowly and the oppressed. To be good to one another is to be in tune with God, to forget your fellow man is to be out of tune with God. D’Souza shows this is the best of Christianity, while it is the worst aspect of atheism. A life without purpose is a life devoted to nothing. If life has no purpose and we are all doomed to nothingness after death, then life itself is nothing. If human life has no meaning then killing, torture, child abuse, and excessive behavior are all acceptable even when they do horrific harm to others. Atheism mean zero morality. Nothing is wrong because nothing is right. This was the ideology of Hitler, Stalin, Mao and all of history’s mass murderers in charge of governments. In fact, a godless atheist government is exactly what communism calls for and our founding fathers warned against. An excellent book. If you are an atheist or agnostic, I dare you to read it. If you are a Christian or simply a non-believer, I ask you to read it.AD2

I was not expecting the level of rigor in addressing fundamental questions about Christianity.Dinesh takes the topic head on using the dialectic academic approach to answer the questions. The book is very well provenanced with hundreds of citations. All that you hear in popular culture is Christian bashing. If you have a sense of history at all, you have to wonder what is true and what is not?Dinesh demonstrates what many have long postulated, the rise of science and the Enlightenment in Europe was fueled by Christianity. There is a sister book to this one that complements it well, “the Politically Incorrect Guide to Christianity.”I recommend reading both of these books.Well done Dinesh!

This is my very first review and I am not "learned." In fact, I am a very simple guy. I'm Catholic and I feel relatively knowledgeable of my religion and the only reason I bought "What's So Great About Christianity" is because of the author, Dinesh D'Souza. I saw him in a debate with a liberal underground terrorist who hates America, and I very much respected the fact that Dinesh loves America and defended our country so vigorously--and even used biblical scripture to describe its exceptional nature. Even though Dinesh is a scholar, the book is written at a level that even the basic reader can readily understand, and it is for Christian believers and non-believers alike. For persons at my simple level of thought, it provoked visions of creation and evolution such as the difference of WHO did it verses…WHAT happened? CREATION is of God and is the beginning. Evolution is of man, and about continuation, change, adaptation, and survival over time.Yet, Dinesh's book certainly does not stop there; that's only the beginning: There's Christianity and Limited Government, Science (Heck, I made the connection between Genesis and the medical term "genes"), the Theological Roots of Science, Christianity and the Invention of Invention, and I loved the chapter on Why Miracles are Possible ( It made me think how people want spectacles to see rather than miracles to believe. And how we couldn't even conceive of a miracle if none had ever happened. All things are possible. Or, how miracles don’t prove what is impossible; they confirm what is possible). Then, there's the old "Christian Inquisition" issue: Dinesh explores it with a sense of openness and critique, yet without bias.Toward the end, Dinesh speaks to Atheism, Why Unbelief is So Appealing, and Where the Atheists Are When Bad Things Happen. While Dinesh does not indict atheists for their wait and see posture, he does make a very strong case for the rest of us--especially our youth--not to be taken in by their highly emotional rhetoric and pseudo-science claims that sound so "good" and "right."Ultimately, Dinesh speaks to Why Man is More Than Matter. We are God's creation and God's light in the world. Our nature is light. As I read I could envision a darkened room, but the moment we turned on a light--the darkness of the room is dispersed and chased away. And it doesn't matter if the room has been dark for one week or 30 years, when our light switch is on--darkness is gone. So when Dinesh talks about man being more than matter--he's absolutely right. There's the "problems of man", and then there's "man as the problem." We must believe who and what we are. Dinesh spells it out for us in his wonderful book, What's So Great About Christianity.
