I am not the artist in my family. My daughter loves art and is learning different techniques all of the time. When I saw this book I thought it would be perfect for her. The Realism Challenge by Mark Crilley is a step by step guide on creating art that is very realistic looking.He keeps supplies really simple and doesn’t encourage going out and buying the most expensive supplies. He suggests purchasing descent products and goes into detail what types of things you will need. I loved his lessons were step by step and he explains things to the point even I feel like I could do it. He begins with basic techniques and starts with a non complex sheet of paper. The next lesson is the same concept but he adds a few wrinkles to the paper. Each lesson gets progressively more difficult.If you love art and want to learn to do more realistic artwork then I would suggest this book. I believe it is a great resource for beginners. My daughter hasn’t had the time to work on anything yet but I’m looking forward to seeing what she will do with this.The book is well laid out and beautifully done. It’s a nice hard backed book full of color illustrations. I really liked everything about it. I received this book at no charges from bloggingforbooks.com in exchange for an honest review.
After creating a few viral videos on realism drawings, Mark Crilley has finally come up with a book that shows you just how he draws those amazing realistic artworks.The Realism Challenge goes behind the scenes with several tutorials that teaches the skills and techniques required to bring realism to your drawings.Through the step by step demonstrations, you'll learn how to observe your subjects, put down the lines to form the shape, and proceed on to colour and adding shadows. The instructions are very clear and are always prompting you what to look out for. For it's all those little details that create the realism.One thing about realistic drawings is they take time. Even drawing something like a piece of paper, cracked egg or a handful of pieces of popcorn takes a good involvement of time. Techniques are important but observational skills are almost as important or even more so. I've tried several of the exercises and realised that I was going too fast. One really has to slow down to observe all the subtle changes in colours and shades in your subject.This book certainly demands patience. There are thirty lessons in the book and that's a lot of opportunity to get your practice. The payoff is a beautiful piece of artwork.Ultimately, it's quite fun to challenge yourself to complete the drawings. Through the book, you'll also learn to create textures like those on a piece of toast, metallic surface, transparent bottles, food, etc.The only downside is the source photos could have been printed much bigger, perhaps one page so that people can see the subjects bigger. For example, it's not easy to make out the details of small seashells in one of the lessons.Highly recommend to all who loves to draw.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Do you want to really learn how to draw the reality you see? Are you going to actually go through with the exercises? If you want a good book to get you started as a lifelong Realist then this book is wonderful as each project builds. If you're curious and want to try it out then do it! You'll not learn to do basic drawing, perspective, or go over how to use certain supplies so I don't recommend it for an absolute beginner.That being said, if you're curious about this then you can just by the bare essentials using his supplies list then go to town on these projects. You aren't spending a fortune on supplies and you'll be proud of each project as you complete it. I'm working on projects and make sure you give yourself deadlines if you want to do this for a living. Give yourself time but don't take six months for one drawing.Mark's book is a nice step by step book and if you have the ambition to do this then this makes a great introduction into Realism. See if you have the patience for this go through each project from the beginning. I've had a lot of fun with this book and still use the techniques I've learned. If you still aren't sure check out his YouTube videos to see what you can learn to do.
This is an excellent book, but not for the beginner. Intermediate is ok but unless you have the basics down, including forms and perception wait until you get some more work under you belt. Definitely got some pointers but in the end we all create our own way of doing things.
As an aspiring artist whose interest is realism, I found Mark's book inspirational. The step by step instructions are clearly written and easy to follow. The book provides instructions on rendering a variety of surfaces -- porcelain, lace, transparent objects, metallic surfaces, fruit and flowers. Mark's instructions, for example, on painting a cut rose can easily be transferred to creating other flowers. I would recommend the book to individuals who have some basic knowledge of colored pencils and watercolors.
It is an inspiring little book for the artist who wants to paint realism and hyper-realism. Don't think that you are getting a book with a lot of detailed analysis on the process of painting realism. It is plain and simple and a good reference.
I love this book. You won't get a lot of detailed instructions to produce a realistic drawing BUT you will get enough tips and instructions on how to observe various details in the photograph and add it to your drawing one step at a time. I like how author has added pictures of his drawing after each step. I enjoy the minimalist instructions it makes me observe the subject more carefully and it helps to improve my skills.
