I like gothic novels and Love So Dark has that feel, like reading a shortened version of a Jayne Eyre type of tale. Overall I enjoyed this novel, although it did move at an uneven pace and some of the characters were a little too over the top.Miss Olympia Daventry has married a man by proxy because she has nowhere else to go. She and her maid travel to the moors to meet her husband, Lord Albus Griffin, Viscount Darke. Her first meeting with him is not auspicious and it sets the tone for her first weeks at the manor. Her husband is emotionally cold and distant and the housekeeper does not want her at the house either. Plus there are strange sounds that reverberate inside the house. All these things would dissuade most women but not Olympia. She harbors her own secrets and needs to make her marriage work.Griffin was rather coerced into this marriage and he hates that his wife is beautiful, desirable and smart. How can he resist her? Griffin’s character is not as well developed as Olympia’s. Griffin is riddled with guilt which is rather overdone and he does not seem to have control over his own estate. He is not as compelling as his protagonist. The mystery surrounding the estate drives this story, probably more than the romance does. There are some villains in this novel and one of them is the epitome of evil, with no redeeming qualities. In some ways, these extra people take away from the main characters. Still this story has a very good heroine, one who is determined and compassionate and a spooky old manor that hides some big secrets.
When Olympia hastily accepts a proxy marriage to Griffin, Lord Darke, she does so to escape a terrible personal situation. She is poleaxed to find that she has jumped into an even more fraught situation. Her new husband is a mystery, the house is run by a disrespectful, spiteful housekeeper, and the widowed former Lady Drake is out to drive her crazy. When the mysterious moaning begins in the middle of the night, the picture of a dark, gothic tale is complete! Chastity Bowlin's writing is so descriptive and passionate that you are immediately sucked into the story and you don't want to emerge. A great read!
First of all, although A LOVE SO DARK is the technically the fourth book in Chasity Bowlin's "Dark Regency" Series, unlike the first three books which are connected, this one completely stands alone. There are not even any crossover characters or anything resembling the sort. And while I normally find this author's work very compelling, mysterious, and romantic, I thought this was was slightly off the mark and not as well executed as I've come to expect from her.I did like both Olympia and Griffin though, even if I never truly fell in love with either of them. It also took me a while to really sense a connection with them as a couple, but eventually they did win me over. My main issue with it however was that there wasn't much mystery or suspense whatsoever. Even the villain and their motives are completely spelled out for the reader. And while Olympia carries a dark and burdensome secret, it basically resolved itself on its own.In the end this story was okay but compared to some of Ms. Bowlin's other stories, this one was probably my least favorite of them so far. And while I knew it would be a dark read, I honestly wasn't expecting it to be quite so depressing and think a little light and laughter would have helped out a lot. Overall I still thought it was a fast paced and entertaining read however so even though I didn't love it, that won't keep me from buying the next book in this series =)Notes, Pages & Kindle Locations: I did notice a number of typos and a couple of annoying discrepancies that caught my attention too. One such occasion has Griffin standing in the hall and then suddenly rising from a table when he takes his leave. Another instance has Olympia somehow swaying on her feet while she's sitting down. As for the story itself, it was neither short nor long and contained 289 pages & ended at 99% and location 2610 on my kindle device.
This is a good Regency romance, and a good addition to the series. It features a likeable couple, and their romance is sweet. I really liked Griffin, and how he tried so hard to make Olympia believe that she was beautiful to him. I also liked how they both supported each other, even though they were strangers when they married. This book does have gothic elements, but the evil is not quite as dark as some of the earlier books in the series -- and I liked that.
This was a great read and page turner! It has mystery and romance and a HEA ending. I really liked the heroine Olympia who was smart and strong and always had a quick retort for all her enemies. Her ladies maid Collins was a nice addition. The Hero Griffin was handsome and likeable treating her as if she were beautiful. I like that they shared their secrets earlier vs later.
This was an awesome gothic historical romance and I truly enjoyed every minute of it. I have always loved these types of romances and this author is one I definitely plan to keep an eye on. Griffin and Olympia were a wonderful hero and heroine and both so deserving of a happily ever after. If you enjoy gothic historical romances, then I highly recommend this book.
Five stars, not only was there was a mystery surrounding Griffin but also his new wife Olympia...Sensuality, mystery, madness and murder...only thing it could have been more dramatic especially towards the end..All in all a good book.
I really liked the combination of historical romance and mystery. It felt like an old-fashioned gothic novel.
