I started reading this when I was almost done reading The Book of Thoth. Admittedly, I did not have trouble following or understanding Crowley except for the times when you are obviously not meant to understand (which is quite often). Most people seem to be bewildered by the first part talking theory but I found it to be chock full of qabalistic gold. Anyway, I recommend at least trying to read Crowley himself before resorting to the training wheels in the form of this book. If you're going to read this first then just read the first few chapters which are mainly background history, then start reading The Book of Thoth and let this accompany it on the side. Read Crowley's descriptions of the cards, pretending as if that is the only information you will ever get; this will force you to get the most out of his at-times enigmatic writing style. When he says something confusing, stop and really think about it. THEN jump over to Duquette and let him spell out the parts you didn't get. I can see how this book could become a crutch since Lon is such an expert and clearly deeply understands the mysteries at play, you find yourself identifying with his sentiments without forming your own. Make sure to leave room for your own interpretations. Other than that, I would say this book is indispensable.
I've learned SO much from this book that I can't recommend it enough.If he simply went through all the cards, as so many other books do, well, his book would be like the others.But he goes over the underlying theory (if I might be forgiven for calling 5000 years of mysticism "theory") and sets a very nice basis for the things that are revealed in the Thoth Tarot.There are not all the many people who are actually qualified to explain all this complicated mystic information but he certainly is. And of the people who can explain it many of them would, no doubt, make it dry. But, good lord, he keeps it interesting.And all this explication is essential because the Thoth Tarot really is the culmination and the bringing together of many many mystic lines of inquiry over thousands of years. It would be truly overwhelming if Mr. Duquette didn't treat the subject with his incredible depth of knowledge and excellently accessible writing!As you might have guessed by this point, I highly recommend this book!
Crowley's original Book of Thoth is MUCH better but it will generally make your brain explode. The only danger in this book is a sprinkling of humor and danger of thinking you understand the Thoth Tarot better than you do - but time and experience naturally and gently correct Beginners Arrogance. At least they seem to be doing so for me!
Great book!I bought the deck, and immediately had to get this book. Helps SO much with reading the actual cards.If you buy the deck... you better buy this next.You're going to want to anyways.
Anyone who has read Crowley's Book of Thoth understands the level of complexity (drawn from the level of the author's genius) that one must cut through as a butter knife through ironwood.I have studied the deck with both Crowley's and Duquette's interpretations on hand, and have found the experience far more rewarding than my attempts to use Crowley as my sole resource.Highly recommended to be used in conjunction with - but not as a replacement for - Crowley's interpretation of the deck.
I do not read Thoth Tarot but I like Lon Milo DuQuette .... Loved the book, learning about Thoth but especially about Aleister Crowley and Lady Harris... Lots of history and interesting details not seen anywhere else... I also like the expanded three card Lon Milo DuQuette spread presented in this book which became one of my favorite spreads.
An excellent, comprehensive take on one of the greatest decks of all time. Duquette is down to earth and has a great way of interpreting the bare bones systems behind this deck with fantastic descriptions and tables and charts. I also love the excerpts he includes from the correspondence letters between Crowley and Harris, it really takes you inside and helps paint a picture behind the mastery of the Thoth deck. This book is so easy to read again and again, and is a great intro to this deck and accompanying book of Thoth- I highly recommend.
Lon Milo Duquette is a treasure. This book has it all-- an overall history of Tarot, the background and contextualization of Crowley's 'Book of Thoth' and his relationship with the artist who painted the deck. The latter half of the book goes into the various associations each card has, from a qabbalistic standpoint as well as a more simplified quick reference chart. Honestly, if you've just bought a Thoth deck, this is the users manual. Pair this with his Chicken Qabalah for maximum results.
